Zach Holz, Professional Counselor Associate (he/him)
About me: I am a relational and depth-oriented psychotherapist. What this means to me is that we are working together, using the crucible of our relationship, to help you come back into a sustained relationship with capital “S” Self- that old, deep self: the one you know in your bones, but perhaps have lost contact with due to the understandable compromises that making a life has required of you. We listen, sometimes in silence, and often through periods of frustration and disorientation, to what your unique life is asking of you at this juncture. Importantly, we use the vehicle of our relationship- the therapeutic alliance- as both the method of insight and the means of healing.
Therapy can be serious work. It can also be shot through with joy and laughter, hard-won delight as we rediscover the you that is waiting to be born. Our hope in session that we nurture together is that what has stayed in the shadow feels permission to come into some measure of light. I bring warmth and compassion, steadiness and grounding, and deep attuned witness to our time together. I work with many presenting issues: anxiety, depression in its many moods, grief, attachment, self esteem & shame, relationship and family issues, ecological anxiety, parenting, career transitions, spirituality and existential concerns. I work particularly well with creative and sensitive folks and people confronting phase of life transitions where the old answers are no longer working. I also work effectively with complex trauma, which is especially well suited to a depth-psychological approach.
I received my training at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara and completed my internship in Portland at a grassroots community mental health clinic. I work with adult individuals and with couples from across the lifespan. In my work, I draw mostly from psychodynamic modalities (Jungian, imaginal, and also contemporary relational analytic perspectives), but also make ample use of somatic, body-oriented modalities and exercises in mindfulness. I follow your lead, especially when we are in challenging terrain, and bring my steady witness into the strong container of our confidential time together. Above all I believe that this relationship, when we’re doing it right, heals.
Psychotherapists are trained to work with many issues and with many aspects of human diversity, so if you’re curious about our possible fit, please ask! I enjoy working long-term with clients who are curious about their experiences and open to life offering them something different.
